Find out how many water wells are needed to provide safe drinking water in India, plus more about the fight against the water crisis!
According to the New York Times, tens of millions of people living in India do not have access to clean water. We're not always aware of this reality, especially when drinking water is in abundance here in the United States.
And because it's not something that we have to live with on a daily basis, it's an easy thing to slip our mind when we're not thinking of it.
And because it's not something that we have to live with on a daily basis, it's an easy thing to slip our mind when we're not thinking of it.
We're here to provide you with the facts. We're presenting you with facts because the more you know, the more likely you are to get involved!
Let's start with drinking water.
Is there enough safe drinking water to supply all 1.3 billion people living in India? And if not, what do we do about it?
How Many Wells Are Needed to Provide Safe Drinking Water in India?
Although an exact number is hard to produce, the answer is "many more"!
Not very many people are aware that poverty in the United States is equivalent to the middle/upper class in 3rd world counties such as India.
The remote villages are especially at risk when it comes to having access to clean drinking water.
According to Global Citizen, "Rural communities who rely on farming for their livelihoods are the most vulnerable to climate change and water shortages. Increased temperatures, changes in season, and prolonged dry spells affect crops and livestock and therefore a person’s ability to earn a living."
The Facts
According to the Deccan Herald, 76 million people in India are without clean drinking water. To put this into perspective, that would mean that the whole east coast of the United States (excluding Georgia and Florida) would be without drinking water.
This number is not only limited to working adults. It includes the elderly, infants, toddlers, and those with disabilities who are unable to relocate.
According to the Indian government, only 1% of the population had access to safe drinking water in India in the 1980s. While that percentage has increased significantly in the last few decades, there are still tens of millions that need access to a well.
The Solution
Because of poor infrastructure and faulty water systems, some people in India find themselves walking miles every day in order to get safe drinking water for their families.
