The very first thing that we do to transform a village is to provide access to clean drinking water. Having safe water is the catalyst that changes EVERYTHING for the people, especially the women.

Water

Transforming remote villages in India and other developing countries starts with giving the people the gift of clean drinking water.

Having access to safe water is truly the catalyst that changes EVERYTHING.

Fresh hope can be seen all throughout the community. The cases of waterborne diseases rapidly decline. People's lives are permanently changed – especially the lives of the women, children and elderly.

Water is intimately related to the quality of life and liberation of the women of the village. When these women no longer have to walk approximately 5 hours every day to bring safe water back to their families, they suddenly have the freedom and the ability to invest in themselves, their families, and their communities like never before!

We've had a front row seat watching thousands of women thrive and develop. So far, Breakthrough Water has completed 147 water well projects, and we're currently reaching our next goal of digging 100 new wells!

Sanitation

As we transform the remote villages of India and other developing countries, our secondary focus after providing clean drinking water is improving sanitation.
Schools, churches, and other public institutions have extremely unclean toilets – if they have any at all. The facilities that can be found are without running water, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and disease.
Not only does this create a health crisis, but it also hits the girls of the community hard. Once a young girl's menstruation starts, she can no longer attend school.
Providing sanitary toilets and facilities with running water to the rural Indian population further decreases disease and allows girls to stay in school!
So far, Breakthrough Water has completed 4 sanitation projects, and 2 more are now in progress.

Education

Transforming rural villages in India and other developing countries takes a multi-faceted approach to accomplish.

  • Clean drinking water brings a new level of freedom to the women living in remote Indian villages and removes the pressure for young girls to drop out of school to help their mothers fetch water with them.
  • Sanitary toilet facilities gives young girls the chance to stay in school even after they start their menstruation.
  • We want to go a step beyond meeting these foundational needs by helping both boys and girls finish their education!

Children are the village's future leaders, parents, and contributing members of society. Educating them helps to break the cycle of poverty and provide hope for a better future.

Sadly, many of the children from remote villages end up quitting school because their families cannot afford the school supplies they need for the upcoming school year. Breakthrough Water meets this need by equipping boys and girls with a full year's worth of school supplies.

Each student receives a sturdy backpack with the following items:

  • 1 water bottle
  • 10 notebooks
  • 1 pencil holder with pens, pencils, and an eraser
  • 1 ruler
  • 1 lunch box or steel plate
  • 1 umbrella
  • 1 pair of shoes
  • Miscellaneous goodies

We make sure to buy quality items that will last the whole school year for these precious children. We even measure every pair of feet to ensure that the pair of shoes we give will properly fit the child.
